Le cheval Tang par Niall O’Neill<\/p><\/div>\n

Dans un article r\u00e9cent sur les Contrerimes de Toulet, j’avais utilis\u00e9 un pastel d’Oldenbroke comme illustration. Mais comme j’avais parl\u00e9 \u00e0 une amie de la technique du pastel, telle qu’utilis\u00e9e par Oldenbroke, en voici le d\u00e9tail, avec explications en anglais (de la main d’Oldenbroke) et en fran\u00e7ais (traduction personnelle).<\/p>\n

Mais auparavant quelques mots sur la biographie d’Oldenbroke :<\/p>\n

I have been painting with pastels for 25 years or so, and have learned from the very practical publications of artists like Alan Flattmann, Daniel E. Greene, and more recently Richard McKinley and Ellen Eagle. The work of other artists who work in the medium is always of interest, hence this blog, and I am happy to have met many of them, and interviewed some for the Pastel Journal. My paintings have still life as their main theme, and have been exhibited in Ireland and in France.<\/em><\/p>\n

Je peins au pastel depuis quelque 25 ans, et j’ai appris d’apr\u00e8s les publications tr\u00e8s pratiques d’artistes comme Alan Flattmann, Daniel E. Greene, et plus r\u00e9cemment Richard McKinley and Ellen Eagle. Le travail d’autres artistes qui utilisent ce medium est toujours de grand int\u00e9r\u00eat, d’o\u00f9 ce blog, et je suis heureux d’en avoir rencontr\u00e9 beaucoup et interrog\u00e9 quelques-uns pour le Pastel Journal<\/em>. Les natures mortes sont mon th\u00e8me principal de peintures et elles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 expos\u00e9es en Irlande et en France.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 These are the progress shots of the ceramic Tang horse I painted last spring. The sketch outlines the positioning of the figure, the vase and the spray of clematis.<\/em><\/p>\n

Happy with the layout, I start to lay in the underpainting with hard pastels.<\/em><\/p>\n

The basic elements are starting to take shape – and, just as important, to realise their values.<\/em><\/p>\n

Les \u00e9l\u00e9ments basiques commencent \u00e0 prendre forme, et, tout aussi important, \u00e0 atteindre leurs valeurs.<\/p>\n

These values are thrown into relief by the laying in of the background, which \u00a0allows me better to judge the contrasts.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ces valeurs sont mises en relief par l’application du fond, ce qui me permet de mieux juger des contrastes.<\/p>\n

More work on the cloisonn\u00e9 vase, and the texture of the horse. At this point I have moved on to soft pastels. In the clematis, the range of neutrals and declension of values in the Blue Earth quinacridone pink proved invaluable.<\/em><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s du travail sur le vase en cloisonn\u00e9 et le grain du cheval. \u00c0 cette \u00e9tape j’ai chang\u00e9 pour des pastels doux. Pour la cl\u00e9matite, la gamme des neutres et la d\u00e9clinaison des valeurs en Blue Earth quinacridone pink s’est av\u00e9r\u00e9e inestimable.<\/em><\/p>\n
